Dirty Ingredients

We believe in toxic-free, transparent beauty. For that reason, we do not allow the following

Animal Testing

We don’t need to hurt the animals. Product should be safe without testing.

Animal By-Products

We do allow the use of lanolin and beeswax if they are ethically sourced.

BHA/BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene are sometimes used in cosmetics (mostly food) as a preservative. They have been linked to cancer.

Ethoxylated Ingredients

This would include ingredients such as sodium laureth sulphates, PEG’s, and phenoxyethanol…just to name a few. When ethoxylated compounds are processed, they create carcinogenic by-product called 11,4 dioxane. These ingredients are often found in mainstream shampoos and conditioners to help the products foam and “clean” the hair of its oils.

Formaldehyde / Formaldehyde Releasing Chemicals

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasing chemicals are a known carcinogenic ingredient found most often in nail polish, eye make up, and synthetic eyelash glues. They can be hidden under names such as calcium disodium EDTA, disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, and DMDM hydantoin / diazolidinyl urea / methylisothiazolinone.

Heavy Metals

Mineral-based pigments that have a high volume of heavy metals can lead to the development of disease and health problems. We require products to adhere to the FDA and EU’s guidelines, as well as trace their sources. We only allow the use of non-nano particles.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used to reduce skin pigmentation and can be found in products such as moisturizers or cleansers. They are a known allergen and a suspected cancer causing agent.

Parabens

Parabens are an inexpensive preservative often found in cosmetic and toiletry products. However, they have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.

Petroleum Derived Chemicals

Petrolatum is a by-product of oil refining. Petroleum derived chemicals such as: benzene, hexane, liquid paraffin, mineral oil, paraffin wax, and toluene are linked to cancer development.

Pthalates

Pthalates are often found in hairspray and synthetic fragrance. They will be listed with words such as: dimethyl benzeneorthodicarboxylate, avolin, 1,2-dimethyl phalates…just to name a few. They have been linked to breast cancer, asthma, ADHD, obesity, type II diabetes, autism, and male fertility issues.

Synthetic Fragrance

EU and US regulators do not require that companies identify the specific ingredient/s used as a fragrance. For that reason, companies are only required to list “fragrance” or “parfum” on the ingredient label. It gives brands an opportunity to hide phthatlates not otherwise listed. For that reason, we require brands to provide a statement that no phthaltes have been used.
