5 Steps to Maintain a Healthy Immune System

5 Steps to Maintain a Healthy Immune System

With COVID-19 the main topic of conversation with everyone these days, we thought talking about immune systems may be a good idea.

Our immune system is our front line defence to any type of pathogen, and it is something that is formed while we are in still tucked away in our biological mother’s tummy.

What can adults do to maintain a healthy immune system?

First we have to realise that the “immune system is is precisely that — a system, not a single entity. To function well, it requires balance and harmony” as talked about in the Harvard Health Publishing article entitled “How to Boost your Immune system’. To maintain a healthy immune system, you need to work on it and not just think that if you drink a jug of orange juice that’s it boosted. Just like the exercising you won’t see results after one go, it’s about a regular routine.

1. Get Enough Sleep

This is probably the most popular universal health tip along with drinking plenty of water. Your body needs sleep to recover and heal while you are not putting energy into any other type of activity. Mathew Walker (professor of neuroscience and author of "Why We Sleep") recommends 8 hours of sleep minimum a day.

2. Eat the Rainbow

We don't mean skittles, but having a very diverse amount of fruit and veg no your plate will help give your body different nutrients from all the various plants which is exactly what it needs to boost your immune system.

3. Citrus Fruits

Citrus has a great amount of Vitamin C which is one of many immune boosting vitamins. A good way of getting some citrus into your system is by having warm lemon water first thing in the morning. Not only will it give you some Vitamin C, but it will also help with your digestion! Win-win

4. Regular Exercise

Another one of those pillars for good health, but the reality is that exercise does so much more for you than just maintain a healthy weight. There are studies that also talk about the benefits of heating your body to a point where it makes your body inhabitable for diseases. This is why the infra-red sauna has become very popular amongst many wellness seekers, myself included.

5. Maintain Clean Hygiene Practices

This goes without saying, but making sure you are maintaining good hygiene practice is beneficial for yourself and for others. This includes washing your hands with soap frequently, coughing into your arm, etc.

Mary-Catherine's wellness journey started during her last years of high school when she struggled with consistent digestive issues. It took some time but she realized she had a nightshade allergy.

This discovery led to her taking a step back and really look at how she lived her life, and she decided to take a holistic approach to her health.

Her wellness journey started with listening to her expanders sharing with her alternative ways of living, to changes in her nutrition, and trying alternative medicine methods.
