3 Brands Doing Great Things For The Environment

Recently, we have come across some awesome brands that are doing great things for the environment and we wanted to share them with you. Consumers are becoming more and more conscious about their impact on the environment and how they shop and it’s great to see so many brands supporting this movement with their own conscious initiatives. Consumers want brands that don’t just provide them with excellent products, but brands that also do their bit to make a positive change. It was even reported that 90% of Americans are more likely to trust and stay loyal to companies that actively try and make a difference.

In the clean beauty community, we are all aware of greenwashing; the idea of using marketing that misleads consumers into thinking a product is environmentally friendly. But consumers should also need to be aware of cause-washing, the use of marketing that claims a social good which is not actually the case. So below we’ve chosen our favorite 3 brands who really are doing great things in their sector, and to which clean beauty brands can look to for inspiration! Who are your favourite brands that are doing good? Let us know in the comments!

We recently came across Stowaway Cosmeticsand we have been in love with their products and brand values ever since. Inspired by overflowing makeup bags full to the brim of half-used and dirty products, Julie Fredrickson and Chelsa Crowley co-founded Stowaway. Their products are simple and polished, cruelty free, and they are also ‘right sized’. Most makeup is oversized and therefore over half goes unused before they expire, resulting in a huge amount of waste. When was the last time finished a makeup product? Can you say great USP? I know I’m guilty of throwing out a half used product far more often than finishing one!

To support their campaign to reduce waste and encourage buying sustainably, Stowaway also has a recycling scheme. Their products are smaller and are intended to be finished which means consumers are going to have more packaging waste on their hands. Through the Stowaway website, customers can download a prepaid shipping label and send their empty packaging back to be recycled. You can also get $5 credit for every 3 pieces of packaging you return!

Finally, Stowaway are impressively transparent about exactly how much it costs to make their products. They give a comprehensive breakdownof every aspect of every product. For example the ingredients in their lipstick cost $1, the packaging $0.30 and the assembly $0.38. By presenting this breakdown, Stowaway are telling their customers exactly what they are getting for their money and showing how much money and product is wasted by buying traditionally sized products.

Kappi is another brand that is doing great things for the environment. Environmentally conscious couple Emily & Freddie were shocked to realise the full extent of the waste epidemic in Australia when watching War on Waste, and they decided to do something about it. Despite already progressing towards waste free living, Emily & Freddie struggled to find reusable products that served as alternatives for the most common single use plastics. On top of that, any products they were able to find were either not stylish, expensive or counterintuitively packaged in plastic themselves!

They went on to create Kappi - the brand made to solve these problems. For some of the worst contributors to the worldwide rise in plastic waste, Kappi has provided sustainable made and stylish alternatives. For example, its been reported that 8.5 billionplastic straws are thrown away in the UK every year, along with a huge 500 milliona DAY in the US! As a simple alternative, Kappi provides gold stainless steel strawswhich can be used over and over. During July, Kappi also pledged to give away 100 of these straws for free to cafe’s in Australia who agreed to stop using single use plastic straws, in their 'Short Straw' campaign.

Some of their other great products include reusable grocery bags, toothbrushesmade from sustainably sourced bamboo and silicone ziplock bags. Although based in Australia, Kappi ship worldwide using the carbon neutral delivery service Sendle!
